6 ways to help PCOS

I see so many women suffering from PCOS, and it really can be an upsetting condition to face.

What happens with women with PCOS is that their ovaries produce imbalanced levels of hormonal secretions, and so instead of stimulating one follicle to produce one mature egg during their cycle, numerous follicles are inappropriately stimulated but can’t mature, so form tiny cysts. This then further disrupts any hormonal secretions, and without the right hormonal environment, the possibility of fertilisation and implantation are reduced.

As there is no real clear-cut reason for PCOS, it is easy to feel like you have no control over your own body or hormones if you are diagnosed. But it is important to remember that it is manageable, and it does not at all mean that you have no chance of getting pregnant. In fact, there is a lot you can do to rebalance your hormones and improve your chances of conceiving.

Rebalance your blood sugar

As your levels of insulin and blood sugar can fluctuate so much with PCOS, choosing slow-release carbohydrates that have a low glycaemic index can help manage this. Also, make sure you eat some form of protein with any carbs, as this will also help balance blood sugar.

Manage your diet

Nutrition is so important for fertility, and good nutrition can particularly help manage your PCOS. Ensuring your diet contains the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables, cutting down on animal fats while increasing your intake of essential fatty acids and taking a good vitamin and mineral supply can all help.

Assist your weight loss

Weight is often a problem with women women with PCOS, and losing even just 10% can bring back normal ovulation. It is harder for women with PCOS to lose weight because the syndrome make their bodies store fat more efficiently and burn calories more slowly, but this does not mean it’s not possible! It is something we focus on a lot at the clinic by encouraging a gradual weight loss of 2 lb a week through diet and exercise.

Try out acupuncture

More research has been carried out on the effect of acupuncture on PCOS than on any other gynaecological problem, and so it is something that I really recommend to women with PCOS more than anyone else. By stimulating B-endorphins, it helps in turn stabilise hormone levels which then regulates the fertility cycle.

Get in regular exercise

Regular exercise increases your metabolic rate and so helps you burn calories more efficiently. Whether this is a session at the gym or a brisk 20-minute walk each day, anything you can fit in will make all the difference over time.

Look after your stress levels

Managing stress levels is even more important for women with PCOS, because stress stimulates the production of more hormones from the adrenals, which can further aggravate the problem. Select the stress-management techniques that work for you and ensure that you add them into your daily routine. This may be yoga, meditation, swimming, running or just taking a long bath – try different things out and select whichever works best.
