There’s a lot of mystery and scepticism surrounding acupuncture as a type of treatment, as it’s so different from the traditional Western approach. With Western medicine, it’s all about the biomedical model, but with acupuncture it’s more about looking at the mind and body as one. Here at the clinic, we combine the two. That is what makes our approach so unique and what works so well for our clients, for both women who are conceiving naturally and those who are using IVF.
But we do understand that it is a quite unusual concept for a lot of women, and so I decided to answer some of your most common questions on the Zita West channel.
And so you have all the information to hand whenever you need, here’s our weekly cheat sheet:
Is it going to hurt? I really don’t like needles.
The needles we use for acupuncture are thin, hairlike and nothing to be afraid of. You will feel a dull sensation, but nothing more than that!
How will I feel after?
A lot of women feel tired after their first session, but they tend to get a better sense of overall wellbeing when they’ve had a course of acupuncture.
How many times will I have to come?
When you first start out on a course of acupuncture, you need to come on a weekly basis for about 4-6 weeks. After that, it becomes more spread out.
How does the process work?
There are 365 acupuncture points on the body, and they are along invisible channels of energy called meridians. Meridians relate to the heart, liver, lungs and other organs. The acupuncturist normally uses 4-6 needles at a time, and through her diagnosis, she decides which points she is going to use. The distribution of heat is also important in acupuncture. We like this whole lower area to be warm when you’re trying for a baby, so the acupuncturist will use the needles accordingly to what she finds.
