About IVF Preparation

There are many factors affecting the likelihood of a successful IVF cycle. Of crucial importance are the quality of eggs and sperm (and hence the embryo) and the receptivity of the uterus to the embryo. The woman’s age has a significant impact on a woman’s egg quality because she is born with all the eggs she will ever have and these suffer progressive damage throughout life due to the impact of unstable molecules called free radicals. These are thought to speed up the process of cellular ageing.

Nutrition and lifestyle factors can help to neutralise their impact and limit any further damage to a woman’s eggs – and a man’s sperm – as they develop and mature. The right nutrition can also help to support a balanced immune function, which is important for successful implantation, and healthy development of the uterine lining.

Recommended supplements

To support the nutritional requirements of the body during pre-conception we would recommend including a wide ranging multivitamin, an anti-oxidant formula and build your stores of DHA and EPA Omega 3 to ensure the egg and sperm are in optimum nutritional condition before IVF. We would also recommend Vitamin D. We would therefore recommend the following:

  • Vitafem (for her)
  • Vitamen (for him)
  • Vital DHA (1 for you and 1 for your partner)
  • Vitamin D Spray

Recommended tests

Vitamin D

Evidence suggests that optimal vitamin D levels can help to improve IVF outcomes. Many people have sub-optimal levels. It is advisable to check your Vitamin D levels to assess the need for and level of supplementation required.

Nutrition consultation

The medical team at Zita West believe that while supplements can be helpful, making the right nutritional and lifestyle changes can help a couple to increase their chances of successful IVF – so much so that a free nutrition consultation is offered to all Zita West Assisted Fertility patients as part of their treatment. Couples who are having their IVF at other clinics can also benefit from the expertise of our expert nutritionists who will advise you on dietary and lifestyle changes and additional supplements, personalised to you, to help improve your chances of achieving a healthy pregnancy.

Individual consultations last 60 minutes and can be carried out in person or by Skype. If you want to come as a couple we also offer a 90 minute consultation. If you would like to book a nutrition consultation please click for further information on how to book your consultation.
